The Caribbean Part Two

Abaco Islands

The Bahamas

The Abaco Islands are the main islands in the Bahamas. They are in the northern portion of the Bahamas, one-hundred eighty miles east of the southern tip of Florida. The main two islands are the Great and Little Abaco. Unlike much of the Bahamas and the beaches of south Florida, most of the islands are comprised of limestone. Most beaches are white sand, and the Abacos are home to the third largest barrier reef in the world. The first believed European settlers were colonists fleeing from the American Revolution in the 1780's.

My favorite part of the Abaco Islands was the pigs on the beaches and in the water. The pigs were super friendly almost like they were domesticated animals. The Abacos are famous for their boat and ship building abilities, they also are home to super large ports. Hope Town had a really cool red and white striped lighthouse. It looked really similar to the lighthouse in Harbor Town, South Carolina.
